Your Medical Tourism Journey: What Happens From First Contact to Coming Home
By Travel4Treatment Medical Team

The Unknown Is the Scariest Part
If you're considering medical treatment abroad, chances are you're dealing with two things at once: a health condition that needs attention, and the anxiety of doing something completely unfamiliar. That combination can feel overwhelming.
We get it. Most of our patients — whether they're coming from Nigeria, Iraq, the United Kingdom, or the United States — felt the same way before their first trip. The fear isn't irrational. You're trusting your body to doctors in a country you may have never visited, in a healthcare system you don't fully understand.
This guide exists to remove the unknown. Here is exactly what happens at every stage of your medical tourism journey with Travel4Treatment, from the moment you reach out to the day you're back home recovering.
Step 1: First Contact and Free Consultation
What You Do
You fill out our inquiry form or send us a message on WhatsApp. Tell us about your condition, what treatment you're seeking, and any medical reports you have. Don't worry about sending everything at once — we'll guide you on what we need.
What Happens Behind the Scenes
Within 24 hours of receiving your inquiry, a dedicated case manager is assigned to you. This person becomes your single point of contact throughout the entire process. They review your initial information, identify what additional medical records might be needed, and prepare your case for specialist review.
Common Fear: "Will they actually respond?"
Yes. Every inquiry gets a personal response within 24 hours. Not an automated email — a real person who has reviewed your specific situation. If you don't hear from us, something went wrong with delivery. Contact us again or try WhatsApp.
What This Costs You
Nothing. The initial consultation, case review, and treatment planning are completely free. You pay nothing until you decide to proceed — and even then, costs are clearly outlined in advance.
Step 2: Medical Review and Hospital Matching
What You Do
Share your medical records: doctor's reports, lab results, imaging (CT scans, MRI, X-rays), pathology reports, and any previous treatment history. You can upload these through our secure portal, email, or WhatsApp — whichever is easiest for you.
What Happens Behind the Scenes
Your case manager compiles your medical records into a comprehensive case file. This file is sent to relevant specialists at 2-3 of our partner hospitals. For example, if you need heart bypass surgery, your records go to cardiac surgeons at JCI-accredited hospitals in India and Turkey. If you need a knee replacement, they go to orthopedic surgeons.
Each specialist reviews your records and provides:
- Confirmation of diagnosis (or alternative diagnosis)
- Recommended treatment approach
- Expected outcomes and success rates
- Any concerns or additional tests needed
Common Fear: "What if they get my diagnosis wrong?"
This step actually reduces diagnostic error. You're getting your records reviewed by specialists who perform your specific procedure hundreds of times per year. Many patients discover alternative treatment options or corrections to their original diagnosis at this stage. It's essentially a free second opinion.
Timeline
Typically 3-5 business days from when we receive your complete medical records.
Step 3: Treatment Plan and Cost Estimate
What You Receive
A detailed, written treatment plan from each recommended hospital. This includes:
| Item | What It Covers |
|---|---|
| Diagnosis Summary | The specialist's assessment of your condition |
| Proposed Treatment | Exactly what procedure will be performed and why |
| Surgeon Profile | Name, qualifications, experience, number of similar procedures |
| Hospital Details | Name, accreditation status, location, facilities |
| Cost Breakdown | Line-by-line: surgeon fees, hospital stay, anesthesia, implants/materials, medications, follow-up |
| Stay Duration | Expected hospital stay + recovery time in the country |
| Success Rate | Expected outcomes for your specific case |
What You Do
Review the options with your case manager. Ask questions. Compare. Take this information to your local doctor for their input. There is absolutely no rush and no pressure to decide.
Common Fear: "Will there be hidden costs?"
No. The cost estimate you receive is comprehensive. It includes everything that will happen inside the hospital. We also provide estimated costs for accommodation, local transport, and meals so you can budget the full trip. If anything changes during treatment (rare but possible in complex cases), you are informed and costs are agreed upon before proceeding.
Timeline
You receive treatment plans within 5-7 business days of submitting records. You can take as much time as you need to decide.
Step 4: Preparation and Travel Planning
Once You Decide to Proceed
You confirm your chosen hospital and surgeon with your case manager. A treatment date is scheduled based on your availability and the surgeon's schedule — typically 2-6 weeks out, though urgent cases can be expedited.
What We Help With
- Visa: We provide a medical visa invitation letter from the hospital. We guide you on the visa application process for your specific country and nationality.
- Flights: We advise on the best airports, airlines, and flight timings. Some patients book their own flights; others ask us to arrange everything.
- Accommodation: We recommend hotels near the hospital, ranging from budget to premium. Many hospitals have affiliated guest houses or serviced apartments for medical tourists.
- Insurance: We advise on travel insurance that covers medical tourism. This is separate from the treatment cost and provides coverage for complications or unexpected events during travel.
- What to pack: Your case manager provides a checklist: medical records (physical copies), medications you currently take, comfortable recovery clothing, power adapters, and essentials for your stay.
Common Fear: "What about the visa? What if it's rejected?"
Medical visas have high approval rates because you have a documented medical reason for travel, a hospital invitation, and a return date. Your case manager has helped hundreds of patients through this process and knows the requirements for each country.
Payment
A deposit (typically 10-20% of the treatment cost) is made to confirm your booking. The balance is paid at the hospital before or during treatment. All payments go directly to the hospital's account — never to an intermediary's personal account.
Step 5: Arrival and Treatment
What Happens When You Land
A driver meets you at the airport — your name on a sign, ready to take you to your hotel or directly to the hospital. Your case manager or a local coordinator is available by phone throughout.
Day Before Treatment
You visit the hospital for pre-operative tests: blood work, ECG, chest X-ray, anesthesia assessment, and a final consultation with your surgeon. This is your chance to ask any last questions face-to-face. The surgeon reviews the treatment plan with you and confirms everything.
Treatment Day
You arrive at the hospital at the scheduled time. The nursing staff prepare you for the procedure. Your surgeon performs the operation. You wake up in recovery — and your case manager checks in to update your family back home.
Common Fear: "What if something goes wrong during surgery?"
You are in a JCI-accredited hospital with intensive care facilities, emergency equipment, and trained staff — the same safety standards as top hospitals anywhere in the world. JCI accreditation specifically evaluates a hospital's ability to handle complications. Your surgeon has performed this procedure hundreds or thousands of times. The risk profile is the same as having the procedure at home — often with a more experienced surgeon.
Step 6: Recovery and Discharge
Hospital Recovery
Depending on your procedure, you'll spend 1-7 days in the hospital. During this time:
- Daily rounds by your surgeon and the medical team
- Pain management and medication as prescribed
- Physiotherapy begins (for orthopedic procedures like knee replacement)
- Regular monitoring of vitals and recovery markers
- Your case manager visits to check on you and relay updates to family
Hotel Recovery
After discharge from the hospital, most patients spend an additional 3-10 days recovering at their hotel before flying home. During this period:
- Follow-up appointments at the hospital as scheduled
- Your case manager remains available 24/7
- Clear instructions on medication, diet, activity levels, and warning signs to watch for
Common Fear: "What if I have a complication after leaving the hospital?"
You remain in the country for a medically appropriate period after discharge. If any issue arises, you have direct access to your surgeon and the hospital. This is built into the timeline — you're not rushed onto a plane the day after surgery.
Step 7: Coming Home and Follow-Up
Before You Leave
The hospital provides you with a comprehensive discharge package:
- Detailed discharge summary in English
- Post-operative care instructions
- Medication prescriptions (with generic names your local pharmacy can fill)
- Follow-up schedule
- Surgeon's direct contact information for emergencies
- Medical records and imaging on CD/USB
At Home
Your case manager checks in with you at regular intervals — typically at 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, and 3 months post-treatment. They coordinate with your local doctor to ensure seamless continuity of care.
If your local GP or specialist needs to speak with your treating surgeon abroad, we facilitate that communication. Most follow-ups can be handled virtually — video calls with the surgeon to review progress, discuss concerns, and confirm recovery is on track.
Common Fear: "What if I need help after I'm home?"
Your relationship with Travel4Treatment doesn't end when you board the plane home. Your case manager remains your contact person. If something doesn't feel right, if you have questions about your recovery, or if your local doctor needs information — we're a phone call or message away. For up to 12 months post-treatment.
