Why Iraqi heart patients increasingly fly to Turkey

Three forces drive the corridor: (1) Turkey's JCI-accredited cardiac programmes — Acıbadem, Memorial, Medipol — operate at international standards with US/UK-trained surgeons. (2) The flight time from Baghdad, Erbil, or Basra is 2–3 hours direct, and Iraqi citizens get an e-Visa online in 24–48 hours. (3) Cost: a coronary bypass (CABG) that runs $12,000–$20,000 with limited availability inside Iraq is $7,000–$15,000 in Istanbul, all-inclusive of surgeon, OR, ICU, implants, and standard hospital stay.

What heart procedures Iraqi patients usually fly for

By volume, the top five procedures Iraqi patients book in Turkey are: coronary artery bypass (CABG), heart valve repair / replacement, stenting (PCI / angioplasty), pacemaker / ICD implantation, and pediatric cardiac surgery for congenital defects. Bentall procedure (combined aortic valve + ascending aorta) and complex redo surgeries are also routinely performed.

Real cost ranges (2026)

Indicative all-inclusive package estimates at JCI-accredited Turkish hospitals: CABG $7,000–$15,000. Single valve repair / replacement $7,000–$14,000. Bentall procedure $14,000–$22,000. Pacemaker implantation $5,000–$9,000. Pediatric ASD/VSD repair $8,000–$15,000. Compare to Iraq private rates which run higher with limited surgical volume — and waiting periods of weeks-to-months at the larger Baghdad centres.

Halal and Islamic considerations

All major Turkish hospitals serve halal-certified meals by default. Acıbadem, Memorial, and Medipol have prayer rooms (مصلّى) with Qibla direction marked, and most have arrangements for Friday Jumu'ah. Female patients can request all-female nursing teams in advance — request this when you submit your inquiry. Family rooms accommodate one attendant on a chair-bed at no extra charge; serviced apartments for additional family are walking distance from the hospital.

Turkey e-Visa: step-by-step for Iraqi citizens

Apply online at evisa.gov.tr. You'll need: (1) Iraqi passport with 6+ months validity, (2) the hospital invitation letter (we issue this within 24–48 hours of medical-record review), (3) credit card for the visa fee. Approval typically arrives by email within 24–48 hours. For longer stays or if your treatment runs past the e-Visa window, we can switch you to a tourist visa or extend in-country. We have never had an Iraqi patient denied the e-Visa with our paperwork.

Direct flights from Iraqi cities

Daily direct flights operate Baghdad–Istanbul (Turkish Airlines, Iraqi Airways), Erbil–Istanbul, Basra–Istanbul (multiple weekly), Najaf–Istanbul. Total travel time door-to-door is typically under 6 hours including airport transfer at the Turkish end. Our coordinator meets you at Istanbul airport with hospital signage and drives you directly to the hospital admission desk or partner hotel — no need to navigate the city alone.

What's included when you go through us

Free, end-to-end: medical-record translation (Arabic↔English), pre-op specialist consultation by WhatsApp video, hospital invitation letter, e-Visa support, airport pickup, hotel/serviced-apartment booking near the hospital, dedicated Arabic-speaking patient liaison through admission, surgery, ICU, and discharge, and post-op follow-up coordination with your local cardiologist in Iraq via WhatsApp. We are paid by the hospital — never by you. The price you pay the hospital is identical to a walk-in patient's price. Verify any surgeon's credentials directly on the JCI directory or Turkish Ministry of Health register.

What you should ask your Turkish surgeon before flying

Five questions worth asking on the pre-op WhatsApp call: (1) How many of this exact procedure have you personally performed in the last 12 months? (2) What's your 30-day mortality and major-complication rate for this procedure? (3) What implants/devices will you use, and are they FDA/CE-marked? (4) What's the standard length of ICU and floor stay for an uncomplicated case like mine? (5) Who'll be available for a video follow-up at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months post-op? A confident surgeon answers all of these without hedging.

Recovery and the trip home

Standard fit-to-fly clearance for cardiac surgery is 14–21 days post-op for an uncomplicated case. The treating surgeon issues clearance — never trust an external timeline if the operating physician disagrees. We arrange post-discharge accommodation at hotel rates (rather than hospital rates) for the recovery period and coordinate the return flight. Routine post-op follow-up is 4 video consultations with your operating surgeon at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months — free, included in the original treatment package.
